If you live in Newtown or surrounding suburbs, you may have recently noticed some new signage on King Street. Posters with big, bold red letters that say ‘STOP WESTCONNEX’ and ‘SAVE NEWTOWN’.
The WestConnex tollway is expected to cost 17 billion dollars and take a decade to build. Last year Tony Abbott said, “motorists will be rejoicing every day” after its completion. But the project has had an overwhelmingly negative backlash from Sydney’s Inner West.
Here I look at the controversy surrounding the WestConnex, in the news again this week because of the Baird government’s anti-protest laws and forced council amalgamations. These councils are now under the purview of a Liberal Party administrator just in time for the final approvals for WestConnex to get through.
